Anxiety isn't the villain, there is no villain, that's just how anxiety works, and if anything, she's an antagonist. She was doing what she thought was best for Riley, just like all the other emotions do - they want to protect Riley. And Anxiety thought she was doing so by being prepared for the future. We can't really stop anxiety, the more we control it, the more it destroys us. She stops the other emotions because this is what real anxiety does, and she just can't help to take control of things. I think they portrayed anxiety incredibly well.
"villain" was probably not the right word, but we occasionally use it interchangeably with "antagonist" which anxiety is. Antagonist isnt always a bad thing or evil person. It's just the character that moves the protagonist/hero to act and creates obstacles. appreciate your clarification tho!
Actually I think Anxiety is an Anti Villain which is seen as the main villain but they’re intentions can be seen as more heroic because Anxiety did do the worst things and is the main problem but she did it all to protect Riley
I loved how anxiety was genuinely shocked at the new sense of self. She didn’t think she was hurting Riley. It’s cool cuz over the many many millennia we evolved anxiety to help us , at the end of the day anxiety is our bodies’ (sometimes overreacting) trying to protect us against perceived threats. So anxiety being surprised that her efforts were negatively effecting Riley made it all the more sad to see :(
I especially loved how they handled anxiety at the very end, if she's spiraling and worrying about things that Riley doesn't need to worry about right now, they help calm her down which let's anxiety remember the Spanish test, something Riley ACTUALLY needs to be worried about right now. A very good way to show off how anxiety can be beneficial if kept in check
Im pretty sure that the High schoolers being portrayed as super mature has also to do that we’re seeing everything through Riley’s point of view. When we’re younger we always think that older kids are sooo cool and mature and chill but then we become those older kids and we’re like “…🤡 for sure”
Absolutely, they sorta show that when Riley over hears the older girls talking abt her but because she’s young, she turns away and doesn’t hear what that captain girl says at the end. It’s something like “you were putting straws up your nose last week” to the other older girl. They’re still just teenagers, but also when you’re a high schooler you always think of yourself as way more mature than freshmen, no matter how much you’re not
The same applies to the first changing room scene. Riley blames herself for the "punishments" the coach hands out---and the movie presents it that way to us, too. But is it very, very, very likely the coach would have ordered the kids to do exactly that no matter what. Collecting phones and having them warm up on the ice? There's no way that wasn't her plan anyway. Combining it with a lesson on focus was just a bonus.
My elementary school also had a middle school next door and when I was a 1st Grader, the 8th Graders looked like adults. Yeah... By the time I was in college and became a tutor for 9th Graders, my thought was "Aww, you're babies with eyeshadow."
20:58 i didnt notice but hes so right! Joys are more affirmations “Im good at hockey” “mom and dad are proud of me” “im a winner”. Anxiety is dwelling on what if’s and terrible things “if im a firehawk people will like me” . 23:28 Disgust is like what u dont like. If u dont like a song disgust is there, if u hate a person disgust is also there. If u cringe disgust is there.
Disgust is also a very primal emotion, it's there to help us avoid things that might not be good for us. If you eat a berry and it's incredibly bitter, that's disgusting, but also, it might be that bitter because what you tasted was poison.
the part where all of the "back of the mind" thoughts comes back like an avalanche is exactly what happens when you have an anxious belief . you start remembering all of the weird embarrassing things that happened to you that confirms that anxious belief. The movie makes it seem like it was only part of the emotions plot to get back to headquarters but if you take the emotions characters out of the equation is just how the brain of an anxious person works. They go to the back of the mind to remember all the cringe and bad things that once didn't matter that much, to confirm that you are not good enough.
Somethin I thought was pretty cool, in less than 5 seconds, Riley’s anxiety just forces her sense of self “I’m a good person/friend” to the back of her mind out of fear of being alone in highschool with no friends. Take out the animated emotions and it’s still something a lot of us did and do as a teenager, just completely disregard or forget who we are in order to fit in. Crazy how accurate this movie is without the little characters. Oh also something I just thought of, her “I’m not good enough” takes on a whole new meaning when you realize that they basically create a sense of self out of memories, a bunch of memories string together to create who you think you are as a person. That’s why the first one was “I’m a good person,” because joy was hand picking the ones where Riley was kind, and the last one is a bunch of different statements because Riley is remembering all of her actions not just the kind ones. But the “I’m not good enough,” was made because Riley kept a bunch of memories and ideas basically hinging her entire worth on hockey and this team, and after seeing the coach’s notebook those memories strung together to create “I’m not good enough (to be on the team/have friends).” Seriously great writing, I’m just starting my first year of psych but this actually has some really interesting visualizations of adolescence and how our brains develop during puberty
2:06 that’s pretty common, they’re intrusive thoughts. They happen because of stress, anxiety, lack of sleep, or big changes, some experts also say that it’s your brain bringing horrible things to mind to check itself, prevent something from happening, or checking if it’s horrified by a horrible act. Most cases, intrusive thoughts mean nothing.
Want to agree with some people, for me these are brilliant moments when we see Anxiety surprised when Riley's self was build and during the "Anxiety hurricane" we could actually see a small tear in her eye. This is one of the main messages of the movie that every emotion is good and does its job. Even first time watching this movie it really got into me that Anxiety is used always in a bad context, but the movie shows us a bunch of moments when Anxiety actually helps in a good way. I think its very showing and important to kind of change the idea of this emotion to appear only in a bad destructive way. The damage happens when 1 emotion takes over all of it (what still happened in the first movie as well, although Joy is used to appear in a good context). So, this is a really eye-opening to show that this is not the existence of Anxiety creates the damage, but her take over
The if then statements from anxiety’s beliefs is so real. Anxiety causes you to have conditional statements which is why it fights so hard to control everything. I also really like that even when joy tried putting back the I’m a good person sense of self it wasn’t working, because at that point Riley wasn’t being a good person: lying about herself to fit in, ignoring her friends, sneaking into the office and hurting someone. There’s so many little things they added to this that I loveeeee. The feeling less joy part is also so real but not necessarily a bad thing. You can be content and proud of your life but that doesn’t mean you have to be happy all the time. Sometimes things suck but it’s not the end of the world. We process, take care of ourselves and move forward ❤
Disgust isn't as random if you think of 'appetite' as its polar opposite, meaning that it processes everything we would tend to dislike -- food, music, people on Facebook, etc.
I watched reel rejects react to this and Anxiety freezing and not knowing what do do when she was overwhelmed (start of a panic attack) made me cry, I experienced this yet again yesterday. Anxiety sucks sometimes but it’s an emotion we need to deal with a figure out what triggers it
Nostalgia can definitely happen at 13. Personally, I was nostalgic about the kid summers I used to have and how my summers began to have more “responsible” things rather than spending all day doing nothing outside
I feel it depends on your personal history, the first one made me cry a lot but man this second film I could relate to much more due to anxiety which is something is struggle with badly.I was sobbing at the end of this one
I agree that Riley didn’t handle this in the best way but in her defense basically two years ago she moved states and now she’s had the same best friends for like two or three years, which isn’t insanely long and then they both have obviously been holding onto the fact that they are going to the same place and leaving her behind. Like that’s a really crappy thing to throw on someone at the beginning of your last summer together when you’ve been talking about being high school teammates for a while
Especially because she's not yet emotionally mature enough to have integrated "no good thing lasts forever" into her core, but she already has scars from experiencing it before. At least this time, she tries to cope with it in a forward-looking way, not with denial like in the first movie.
First time watching you guys. I'm waiting to see your guys' reaction to 'I'm not good enough' scene and OMG you guys are such different people LMAO! Nick literally was me. Cory was just watching a movie and reacted to the plot with logic. Talk about suppressed emotions lmao.
Who else wants to see pain as a emotion because isn’t pain universal for everyone as we get older we have body pain and then we get offended as well and love as well those feelings are important as well
Nick and Cory are 30? you look 21to me. man, i'm old. Nostalgia happened when i was 10 and we moved cities, i missed my old home, and i felt like the old school was the childhood years
I saw this in theatres with my preteen son and we had a good talk about anxiety and how it makes us feel. But man watching this again now had me bawling. ❤

I thought Some of the Places Like Sar-Casm, and the Subconscious. 1:30 I have braces Now and Two of My siblings have Braces. 3:11 Relatable. 3:16 Yes, I do that At Night and My Teeth Hurt really bad. 3:33 No. 3:36 Not really?🫤 7:22 Its Not all that bad. But Yes You should be Terrified. I've done some research, the blue things(people) are neurons. the things in the brain that do most of the "moving" of thing in the brain. so when new things are introduced to the brain(like puberty) they work like crazy and weird to counter balance everything . lmao
Cory I think you're talking about intrusive thoughts!! Everyone has them and they're normal,, but it can be a sign of OCD if they lead to compulsions or they start controlling your life.
I personally don’t want to watch the movie just yet myself, I’ve seen a few clips and reactions by few moments, and from what I get, anxiety seems to be the focus, and yeah, I mean I’m just not ready to relate and be sad asf.

"This is the kind of coach that would make me stop doing the sport"... that means the best kind of coach cause you obviously dont belong there with that attitude.
Jesus they pause more than a slow crack head on taco Tuesday lol they always have a question during the movie but pause it right before the answer is about to come up on screen 🤡💀
Are you uncomfortable with feeling sadness or vurnable feelings? Every time a scene comes along thats more heavy on the sadness you guys make jokes instead of just watching the scene and allowing yourself to feel things. Like with Joy telling the other emotions she cant stop anxiety and you make pill jokes, and when Joy is called by riley for a touching moment at the end and you make sticky finger comments and ramble on about ruining equipment of yours instead of being with Joy and Riley's moment. Its not an attack, I just noticed this happend a lot. Is that done on purpose or where you guys not aware of it?

Yea, super helpful in making us not approach that bush. Kinda losing the plot in today’s day and age….
Nick almost crying when the emotions are hugging Riley's new sense of self is everyone in theaters
“Maybe this is what happens when you grow up… you feel less joy” DAMN😭
it's true though
“You think there’s gonna be a third one?” This movie made like a gazillion dollars in the box office, of course there’s gonna be a third one!
Its one of the few franchises where having sequels actually makes sense.
Idk if they will but if they followed Riley to motherhood, that mother guilt would be a great angle. As a mom it would wreck me 😅
